I’ve been thinking for a while now about putting a shelf of some sort in the toilet room of our master bathroom. I just couldn’t quite decide what type of shelf to build. My friend, Kelsey, gave me this, I don’t even know what you would call it, chippy farmhouse thingy with awesome brackets hoping I would be able to find something cool to do with it. Let’s be honest, this thing sat in my garage for months until the other day when I had an epiphany. Make a shelf out of it!!! Does that ever happen to you? Have something cool laying around with no idea what you will do with it and then it just hits you. Well, it happens to me a lot.
This is what the thing looked like before. It’s a super cool piece, just look at that old hardware and the details in the spindles.
Really, the only thing I did to make it into a shelf was add the bottom piece of wood.
In order to get the bottom piece of wood to match the rest of the shelf, I first stained it with Minwax Dark Walnut, let it dry, and then dry brushed it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in French Linen. The grey chalk paint gave it more of that weathered look I was going for.
I purchased the galvanized bucket (holding t.p.), glass bottles and mini hydrangeas at Michael’s. I added a little extra touch to the bottles by simply wrapping them with twine.
I love how simple this project was yet it brings so much character to the space. Plus, it goes pretty well with our Rustic Towel Rack I made a while back.
What do you think of my chippy farmhouse shelf?
